FISHING ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

Vancouver Island offers anglers a world of fishing opportunities. We've got everything from big-game trophy fishing on the open ocean to tranquil lakes and streams for trout, steelhead and even smallmouth bass. Island Angler was created to open up this world of fishing to expert and novice alike.
Salmon fishing goes on in all year off our shores but the big fish start to show up in early summer with the season peaking in late summer. Salmon are also caught in our rivers as they begin to travel in their spawning cycle  in the fall. (See our book Island Angler's Guide to Saltwater Salmon Fishing.)
Winter and spring offer anglers the opportunity to fish for giant Pacific Halibut as well as salmon. Our halibut can grow to be up to 400 pounds and provide the ultimate in big-game fishing.
Great fishing for trout is available in lakes and streams all the time. Cutthroat and Sea-run Cutthroat, Rainbow, Brown and Dolly Varden Trout are thrive in Island lakes and rivers. Trophy size smallmouth bass are also found in some lakes. (See our book Island Angler's Guide to Bass Fishing.)

Fishing Reports RECENTLY UPDATED !!

 

Port Hardy - Summer fishing for Halibut up to 250 lb. Chinook salmon to 60 lb. Winter - Halibut and smaller "feeder" salmon. Also huge ling cod and bottom fish. Great trout lakes (cutthroat, rainbow and Dolly Varden) and steelhead rivers.

Campbell River - Summer chinooks to 60 lb., coho, pinks and chum salmon + bottomfish and halibut. Campbell/Quinsam River for steelhead, cutthroat trout. Local lakes have good cutthroat and rainbow trout fishing.

Gold River/Nootka Sound - Summer chinooks to 50 lb. Halibut to 150 lb. Steelhead in Gold River. Big trout in local lakes.

Comox/Courtenay - Summer chinooks to 40 lb. + bottomfish. Coho and pink salmon in the Strait also river fishery includes searun cutthroat. Productive lakes for rainbow and cutthroat trout.

Mid-Island Beaches and Estuaries - from Nanaimo to Campbell River offer great summer and fall fishing for pink and coho salmon, available to fly fishers and spin-casters. (See our book Island Angler's Guide to Saltwater Shorecasting.)

Shore-Casting - rocky points, breakwaters and beaches all around Vancouver Island is a great way to catch salmon and a variety of bottomfish. (See our book Island Angler's Guide to Saltwater Shorecasting.)

Parksville - French Creek area has good chinook fishing. Pink salmon offshore and in estuaries in late summer/fall. Local lakes include Spider Lake for smallmouth bass. Cutthroats, rainbows and some brown trout in area.

Port Alberni - Big summer chinooks, sockeye and coho. Halibut out in Barkley Sound. Stamp/ Somass River for fall salmon and winter steelhead. Trout in local lakes.

Tofino - Chinook salmon to 50 lb. + good coho fly fishing inside waters. Halibut fishing several miles offshore.

Bamfield - Chinooks, sockeye and coho all summer. Good interception point for Barkley Sound and open Pacific fish. Halibut offshore and in Barkley Sound.

Nanaimo/Nanoose - Chinooks to 35 lb. beginning in May Pinks in estuaries and offshore. Good bottom fishing. Local lakes for trout plus great smallmouth bass.

Lake Cowichan / Duncan Area - Sansum Narrows for summer chinook salmon to 40 lb. Pinks, sockeye and coho generally farther out among Gulf Island. Cowichan River fishing for winter steelhead and fall salmon, as well as trout fishing year' round. Troll or fly fish on Lake Cowichan for big trout. Lots of lakes, including bass. Along with rainbows cutthroat and brown trout there are Eastern brook trout in a couple of small lakes.

Port Renfrew - Great chinook fishing starting May/June. Halibut offshore. Coho close in.

Victoria area - Diverse and productive year 'round, for chinooks, pinks, sockeye, halibut, bottomfish. Victoria waterfront, Oak Bay, Sannich Inlet (not very productive) Sidney and the Islands. Lots of lakes nearby, including trout and bass.

Sooke - Chinooks to 60 lb. starts May/June. Sockeye and pink salmon (odd years). Local lakes offer wilderness experience near the city for trout. A couple of small lakes also hold smallmouth bass.
